What is an Intranet?

...An Intranet is a computer network within an organization that uses Internet (World Wide Web) technologies to enable its users (usually employees) to find, use, and share Documents as well as Information and Business Process. In some organisations an Intranet is the primary way for employees to obtain and share work-related documents, share knowledge, collaborate on designs, access e-learning and disseminate company news. Although an Intranet may also link its users to the Internet, it is not generally accessable to the public. If a part or all of an Intranet is made available to a controlled set of external users then this is known as an Extranet.

Why Intranets?

Most Business are run as a result of people working together.

How do your employees communicate? by phone, email, fax or by person-person meetings? Are your employees/offices geographically dispersed?

Implementing an Intranet can reduce the time your employees spend on routine communications. Instead of using a stream of email to convey the message consider using Forms on your Intranet. Well designed Forms for frequent tasks within your organization will streamline communications.

Examples: Helpdesk requests, Equipment repair stationary re-order, telephone messages and the list goes on.

And how about time spent chasing paper? ...trying to hunt down paper forms, reports, documents? Consider converting to electronic formats and use Document Management facilities on your Intranet.
